About the event
A visit to Town Creek Indian Mound is an excellent way to expose our group to a unique period in North Carolina history and explore a fascinating culture. The cost per student is $5.00.
This is a primarily outdoor activity, please dress accordingly. Bring your water bottle and sunscreen if needed. Wear comfortable shoes, there is allot of outdoor walking.
The Itinerary is as follows:
Orientation/Movie/Museum- this prepares students for what they can expect as they travel into North Carolina’s prehistoric past and includes an orientation film in our auditorium followed by a stroll through our museum to view the exhibits. This portion of the tour requires approximately 30 minutes.
Hunting Tool Demonstration- This 30-minute presentation covers 10,000 years of hunting tool technology and evolution from spear to atlatl, bow and blowgun. The conversational lecture style, combined with tool demonstration engages students, and makes this a consistent crowd favorite.
Village Tour- a 45-minute guided tour of the partially reconstructed Mississippian village site includes an orientation of the village and a visit to three structures, including the Town House on top of the mound. Your guide will have several presentations for you and will engage students to help build a clearer understanding of the use of this land by the mound builders.
Activity- Learning Center: The learning center is a 30 to 45-minute presentation covering period food preparation and reservation. It is conducted in a palisade enclosed, woodland setting and uses a mixture of lecture, demonstration, and touch objects to bring the tools and methods to life. This activity is suitable for all ages.
Lunch- Please bring a picnic lunch. There are shaded tables, or you can bring your own blanket.
Activity- The pottery activity requires around 30 minutes during which students will first learn a little about the role of pottery played in the Pee Dee Culture and how it was made. Students will then make their own pinch pot they may take home with them. This activity is suitable for all ages.
Cordage: The cordage activity requires around 30 minutes during which students will first learn a little about the use of what we now call rope or twine by the people of Town Creek. Students will then create a length of cordage to be used as a bracelet. Cost is $2 per participant. This activity is recommended for ages 10 and up.
